From the 1st December 2015 Wales changed the way a person becomes an organ donor by the introduction of a revolutionary new system.

The new system means adults will be regarded as having consented to organ donation unless they have opted out. The change in law aims to increase the number of donors by 25%. Since the implementation of the new system 86,000 have opted out and more than one million people - 34% of the population - have registered to opt in.

The reason for the change is because there is a big shortage of organs for transplant in Wales and the UK. Also the new system will be clearer for everyone including families that say no to organ donation if they don't know if their loved one wanted to donate.

The Health Minister Mark Drakeford called it a "ground-breaking step which will save lives".
