Due to increasing complaints over the past few months, the criminal court charges, which saw defendants paying towards the cost of their trials, will be scraped by Christmas.

This news has been widely welcomed across many legal professions and those working with the criminal justice sector. Currently, the charges stand at any amount between £150 to over £1000 and it is not means tested. In light of this, it was highlighted that defendants were pleading guilty to offences that they did not commit to avoid paying unaffordable fees, in addition to creating further financial hardships for many and victims missing out on compensation. Now, Judges and Magistrates will have discretion when ordering financial penatlies.

This is a move that will definitely address the concerns surrounding fair trials and injustices sustained upon individuals.
